Gaston Fire & Rescue celebrated a milestone this year as its Kids Fire Camp reached its 10th year, and the 2026 graduation on Saturday drew recognition all the way from Washington. Congressman Don Davis, who represents North Carolina's First Congressional District, sent a letter of congratulations honoring the all-volunteer department and its young graduates.
Kimberly Mack, District Director for Congressman Don Davis, attended the ceremony in person and presented the letter to Chief Ed Porter Jr. on behalf of the Congressman.
In the letter, Davis praised the department's commitment to local youth. “Congratulations on the successful completion of your Kids Fire Camp!” he wrote. “Your dedication to educating young people about fire safety, teamwork, and community service is truly commendable.”
He pointed to the difference the program makes long after camp ends. “Programs like this make a lasting impact by helping children gain valuable knowledge and confidence while fostering positive relationships with local first responders,” Davis wrote, thanking the department for “investing your time and effort into creating such a meaningful experience for the youth in your community.”
A decade in, the camp has grown into a true community effort. Each summer it introduces kids ages 10 to 14 to the real work of firefighting and emergency response. From June 22 through 27, campers deployed hose lines, climbed ladders, and ran rescue drills under the supervision of certified Gaston Fire & Rescue volunteers, earning hands-on certifications by graduation day.
A week like this doesn't come together alone. Neighboring agencies and community partners turn out year after year to share their time, equipment, and encouragement, giving campers a firsthand look at the people who answer the call across the region. That support is a big part of what has kept the program going strong for ten years.
Davis closed with a note of encouragement, writing that he “applauds your commitment to public safety and community engagement” and wishing the department “continued success in future programs.”
